St. Trinitatiskirche

Church
On the east side of present day Holzmarkt (wood market), from the remains of the former Emperor’s Gate, St Trinitatis was built as a protestant ‘church for sermons’. Its richly structured baroque facade, with the old town to the east, it was a festive portal indeed. The Emperor's Gate was created by the Dutch architect and painter Hans de Vries in 1589. You can still see the last remains of the old gate inside the church in the passage between the nave and the sacristy.

Out of the rest of the old gate, rose an impressive cupola. It was planned by the master builder to the ducal court Johann Balthasar Lauterbach, and was created between 1693 and 1700. This was to become the model for the rotunda of the great Wolfenbüttel library some years later.

The cupola of Trinitatis was destroyed in a fire in 1705. More than a decade later, between 1716 and 1722, Hermann Korb was tasked with building the church anew, while retaining the towers of the old facade. Clamping the two towers together was a facade echoing the former ducal pleasure summer residence in Salzdahlum. The consecration of the building as a parish church followed in the year 1719.
