Guelph Crypt

In the Guelph Crypt, the members of the Guelph family lie in sarcophagi, some of which are richly decorated and artistically very valuable. While Henry Julius was buried here in 1613 in comparatively modest surroundings, other sarcophagi are of impressive opulence, such as the double coffin of Anton Ulrich and his wife Elisabeth Juliane.
After being inaccessible for over 30 years, visitors have been able to visit the extensively renovated Guelph crypt since 2015 as part of a guided tour or on their own and marvel at the sarcophagi in the long corridors. Various display boards provide information about the Guelph princes buried there and their relatives, who were interred here until 1767.
