The windmill at the Bungenstedt Tower is located south of the Wolfenbüttel village of Halchter, between the Oker and the former B4 federal road. It was built in 1880 as a Dutch mill. Due to its construction and mode of operation, this mill is a unique example of the transition from artisanal to industrial technology in our region. Its grinding mechanism has remained virtually unchanged and in good condition since its construction. For these reasons, it is considered a particularly valuable architectural monument. It is also one of the most striking rural cultural monuments in the town and district of Wolfenbüttel. The mill was operated until 1956, most recently with a diesel engine. As it has not generated any income since then, its owners have not succeeded in saving it from decay, despite admirable efforts. Interested citizens have therefore founded an association. The Förderkreis zur Erhaltung der Windmühle am Bungenstedter Turme.V. was founded on June 7, 1983 with 75 members. It now has around 140 members. Due to its objectives, the association was recognized as a non-profit organization by the Wolfenbüttel tax office. Since 1983, the association has been working on the restoration of the mill, financially supported by the town and district of Wolfenbüttel, the state of Lower Saxony, the Braunschweig Vereinigte Kloster & Studienfonds and the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung. However, the restoration work was only made possible by countless hours of voluntary work and many donations. The mill, which had been without sails for around 60 years, was given new sails in 1992 and a shell limestone plaster finish in 1997. Since 2001, the mill can also be operated with an electric motor.
