The tax authorities played a central role in the appropriation of Jewish assets. Through tax and levy regulations, the National Socialist regime appropriated the assets, land, businesses and even household goods of Jewish families. In addition to physical and psychological persecution, their financial destruction was also driven forward.
As early as 1934, the Reich Flight Tax was adjusted and specifically tailored to emigrating Jews. The situation worsened in 1938. In spring, Jewish citizens of the Reich were required to register and value all their assets and report any changes. In November, in response to the pogrom night, a special payment is demanded from them as "atonement". Anyone who owned more than 5000 Reichsmark had to pay 20 percent in four installments. As the desired total sum of one billion Reichsmarks was not reached, a fifth installment was due in November 1939. Businesses had to be closed and many properties were sold under pressure. Everything that was left behind due to flight or deportation - furniture, clothing, musical instruments, household goods - was used by the authorities or publicly auctioned off for the benefit of the state coffers.
The widow Henriette Rosenthal lived here, at Am Alten Tore 6, with her disabled granddaughter Lore. After the death of her husband, she was the owner of the property and was also obliged to pay the Jewish property levy. As she was in arrears with the payment of the fifth installment, she applied for a payment remission, but this was rejected. In February 1942, the Chief Finance President ordered the confiscation of her assets in favor of the German Reich in accordance with an order from the Brunswick Minister of the Interior.
Shortly before the deportation, Henriette Rosenthal, who was now living in one of the Jewish houses in Wolfenbüttel, filled out a list of their remaining possessions. She and her granddaughter were taken to Auschwitz. Their remaining possessions went to the German Reich.
